What are Guideline Daily Amounts?

Guideline Daily Amounts (GDA) give an insight into the composition of a product. The icon is on the front of the packaging. GDA also indicates what percentage one portion contributes to the total daily energy requirement.

How should I use the Guideline Daily Amounts information?

You will find the Guideline Daily Amounts icon on all products. Each icon indicates the number of grams of a nutrient (kilocalories and fat) per portion. This is supplemented with a percentage that indicates what percentage this represents of the total daily energy requirement. You can use this to work out how much this ‘contributes to’ or ‘is part of’ what you need in terms of nutrients in an average day.

Who introduced Guideline Daily Amounts?

The Guideline Daily Amounts (GDA) information is a joint initiative of the CIAA, which is the European umbrella organisation of the food industry, and the Federation of the Netherlands Food and Grocery Manufacturers (FNLI). It can be applied to all foods. This makes it easier to make balanced dietary choices. Guideline Daily Amounts are used in Great Britain, Germany, France and Belgium.

How did Guideline Daily Amounts come about?

The Guideline Daily Amounts (GDA) information supplements the existing nutrition information on the label. It gives you a greater insight into the contribution that a portion makes to your daily energy requirement. An intake of 2000 kcal per day is used as a basis. The guideline amounts have been calculated by nutritionists from the European umbrella organisation for the food industry. They are based on scientific data published by Eurodiet. Eurodiet was a science project on nutrition and diet for a healthy lifestyle in Europe.

Why are 2000 kilocalories used as a reference?

Adult women only need 2000 kcal per day on average. It can be said that this quantity is sufficient for the majority of the population. Individual needs may vary, depending on gender, age, physical activity and other factors. For example, the figure will be different for active adults, men and children. The Guideline Daily Amounts (GDA) information serves as an indication. Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide individual information on labels, so we have chosen to use these values, which best match the guide values for a majority of the population. For specific advice, we recommend you consult a nutritionist and/or dietician.

Are the Guideline Daily Amounts the same as the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) that is specified on the packaging?

No, they are not the same. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) indicates the quantity of various vitamins and minerals that people need on average in order to stay healthy. If vitamins and minerals are mentioned on the label, both the quantity of the vitamins/minerals and the percentage of the RDA are indicated. You can use this information to determine the extent to which a product contributes to the required daily dose of vitamins and minerals. In contrast, the Guideline Daily Amounts (GDA) information shows what percentage a product contributes to the maximum that you should consume on a daily basis in terms of energy (kilocalories), sugars, fat, saturated fat and sodium (salt). It does not, therefore, have anything to do with vitamins and minerals
